Cancer "0" Fruits and Veggies "10"

A pilot study involving 28 women with a high risk for breast cancer concluded that eating nine or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables significantly reduced DNA damage to their white blood cells in just two weeks. The study was conducted at the AMC Cancer Research Center in Lakewood, CO.

Every day, our DNA is subject to damage from the toxic molecules known as free radicals. It is this damage that experts believe leads to cancer. But free radicals can be neutralized by fruits and vegetables containing high levels of vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals (certain chemicals which occur naturally in plants). The exciting results of this study, which was sponsored by the American Institute for Cancer Research, seem to prove that the protection added by eating nine or more servings of fruits and vegetables is seen almost immediately. It's not yet known whether women and men outside the high-risk groups enjoy the same benefits as the pilot study group, but research is continuing. Considering the number of cancer cases, however, it's probably prudent to act before studies are complete. Why not heed Mom's advice to "eat your veggies" and "have some fruit"!
